The art of the parable works! Jesus, by telling them, aroused the desire of his disciples: they wanted to understand and asked questions. By giving them the explanation too quickly, he would have made them less interested.
Before going any further, it is appropriate to reread this same parable in verses 26-30. The disciples wanted to remove the tares that had grown in the middle of the field and Jesus told them that they risked removing the good grain as well. We have the key now: it is during the final judgment that the tares will be removed and the good grain will be reaped. And, in this matter, the only judge is God.
The book of Genesis already specified that only God possesses the knowledge of good and evil, the key to true judgment. The person who claims to be capable of it thinks he or she is something he or she is not. After the parable of the tares, Jesus proposed that of the sower which clarifies our true responsibility: if we are not mandated to separate the wheat from the chaff, we are on the other hand responsible for the land that we offer to the Word of the Lord. Who do we give free rein to in our lives? And how do we prepare our land for the Lord? This is a way to prepare a good harvest for the day when God himself will separate the wheat from the chaff!
