A 39-year-old American man was rescued last Tuesday after spending more than a month adrift on his sailboat in the Pacific Ocean.
The sailor in question, Kai Sato, left Santa Catalina Island, California, on June 7 to reach Hawaii, according to Hawaii News Now.
About two weeks into his journey, the mast of his boat broke and he found himself helpless in the face of the immensity of the ocean.
“I cried for a whole week,” Mr. Sato told the American media. I was drifting south. I felt like I was going to try to start my engine and purposely suffocate. »

The American was finally able to start his engine, but he quickly ran out of fuel.
After a few days of depression, he set about repairing his sail.

According to CNN, he survived by eating fish and gruel.
He also reportedly ran out of water on July 11, forcing him to set up plastic-covered buckets of salt water to collect the condensation and drink from it, reports Hawaii News Now.
Mr. Sato was eventually able to reach a commercial corridor and was spotted by a ship on July 21 and was able to be rescued.
“I was crying, I was so happy,” he said.
This mishap did not get the better of Kai Sato’s maritime ambitions, who soon plans to return to sea in the Philippines, but with a larger ship this time.
