Biblical commentaries
“They presented to Jesus a man possessed who was deaf and mute. » It is to the Word itself, the Word made flesh, that a man deprived of all conversation is presented. And, expelling the demon, it gives him back the ability to listen and express himself.
Impossible, for a nun like me, to comment on this story without hearing, in echo, the verse from Psalm 50 which opens each of her days: “Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. » It is very necessary for us to ask daily to be introduced, before any other exchange, into the great encounter of the Lord with humanity. It is daily, in fact, that we experience an interior battle between the Word of truth and its simulacrum. The Word of God opens a space for everyone; it enables us to take into account the voices of others while making our own heard. The lies of the devil, on the contrary, strive to enclose us on ourselves.
It is up to us, when we open our mouths, to choose who we want to follow. Will our words leave the conversation open to whoever wants to take it up, like the cry of admiration springing from the heart of the crowd: “Nothing like this has never been seen in Israel!” » ? Will they, on the contrary, seal it with a definitive judgment, like the declaration of the Pharisees: “It is by the chief of demons that he casts out demons”?
