A flash flood hit a tourist spot in northwest China on Sunday afternoon, killing 10 people and injuring 23, state media reported.
“A mountain torrent caused by short-term torrential rains at a tourist site in Weiyuan county, Dingxi city, trapped several campers” in Gansu province, public broadcaster CCTV said.
In a previous report, CCTV located the flash flood in the Shuangshimen tourist area, located in the rugged mountainous regions of southern Gansu, about 1,200 kilometers southwest of Beijing.
Shuangshimen is famous for its natural stone arches, alpine meadows and mountain streams. It is a popular camping spot in summer.
The injured were taken to hospital for treatment and 174 other people were rescued, according to CCTV.
Large areas of southern China are on high alert for flood risks this Sunday, since Typhoon Noul made landfall early in the morning.
Parts of Gansu, far from Noul’s path, also saw heavy rainfall on Sunday, and local authorities across the province issued weather alerts.
