Chronic

Every week

Pepper and honey

Light breeze, plant scents under the starry sky, beneficial languor… Have the intoxicating sensations associated with summer evenings been undermined by the heatwave we have just experienced? Catching their breath, everyone fears a new – probable if not certain – rise in temperatures, accompanied by tiring days and restless nights, soon followed by devastating storms… Farewell to the delights of the “long vacation” season, migration to the sea, the countryside or the mountains, and open-air festivals? The cancellation of some of them, such as Solidays in Paris or Garorock in Marmande, is accompanied by worried but necessary reflection on the future of summer cultural events. There is a questioning of the hitherto obvious equation: festivals = June + July + August. Public authorities, artists, organizers and spectators, we have every interest in imagining new models together, in reinvesting in milder seasons, in changing our habits before having to, forced and forced, mourn. Distancing ourselves from the unanimously joyful and positive image of summer requires a real cultural and psychological revolution. Trying to be its actors will perhaps help to endure it less painfully.
