Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Klara and the Sun (2026), a new dystopian science fiction film by Taika Waititi starring Jenna Ortega as an artificial friend who must try to save a broken family.
Artificial Friend
The film is based on the bestseller of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro and follows the story of Klara (Ortega), a robot designed to combat loneliness. A mother (Amy Adams) buys the robot for her daughter Josie (Mia Tharia) who is suffering from a mysterious illness. When Josie and Klara meet each other, there is an immediate special connection.

Nobel Prize for Literature
In 2020, Sony Pictures already acquired the film rights to Ishiguro’s novel. Ishiguro, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017, will remain involved in the project as an executive producer. The film is directed by Taika Waititi, known for films like Thor: Ragnarok (2017) in Jojo Rabbit (2019).
In addition to Ortega, Adams and Tharia, the cast also includes Natasha Lyonne, Aran Murphy (Cillian Murphy’s son) and Simon Baker.
Release date
Klara and the Sun will from 29 October can be seen in Dutch cinemas.
