In a major interview with Interview Magazine, Madonna has explained in detail for the first time why the long-awaited film about her life was never made. The singer worked on the project at Universal Studios for years, but the collaboration stalled on budget.
Four years of work
Madonna says she worked on her script for two years and then spent another two years at Universal Studios working with producers to work out budgeting and casting. Ultimately, the issue came down to money. According to Madonna, Universal Studios did not agree to a large budget.
We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed—I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.

From film to series
When the film project fell through, Madonna received a new offer. Netflix approached her to create a series, but that brought with it a new problem. She was not allowed to simply use the script she had written for Universal.
Then Netflix reached out to make a series. That was a whole other long process, because I couldn’t use the script I had with Universal unless I bought it from them for an extortionist’s price, even though I wrote it.

Ultimately, she decided to focus on music. On 3 July her new album is coming Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II out.
