In recent weeks, the cinema lists have been unexpectedly dominated by two special films. 26-year-old Curry Barker scored with his Obsession (2025), while the production of the only 20-year-old Kane Parsons, Backrooms (2026), even became the most successful A24 film ever in the United States. The success of the makers and the films did not go unnoticed in Hollywood. None other than Steven Spielberg recently expressed his admiration for the new generation of filmmakers.
Low budgets
Obsessions tells the story of a young woman haunted by a sinister presence. Backrooms is based on the popular internet phenomenon about endless, deserted spaces where something terrifying lurks. Despite their relatively simple premise, both films became huge box office hits. That is precisely what impresses Spielberg so much. The director praised not only the quality of the films, but especially the fact that the films were made with relatively modest budgets. Obsession cost less than a million dollars, while Blackrooms was realized for approximately 10 million.
Not seen yet
Although Spielberg Backrooms hasn’t seen yet, he is already praising the makers endlessly. The director plans Backrooms view in the short term. Obsession he has already seen it. He simply thought the film was ‘great!’. Spielberg was also recently pleased with the Oscar-winning film Weapons (2025). He then stated that some horror films are so satisfying that it takes away his need to make a horror of his own.
