Look the war in the face. In France, the process requires effort. Our country has lived in peace since the independence of Algeria. Soldiers wearing the tricolor badge are certainly engaged in external operations, under the national flag or those of the UN, NATO and the European Union. But the clash of arms and the tragedy of civilian casualties remain distant realities, despite the deluge of images propagated by social networks.
And yet, the threat is getting closer because an enemy points to us: Russia. Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but his project is broader: he wants to dislocate the European continent to deploy his empire there. The general staffs are therefore warning of the risk of a conflict in which French troops would have to be massively involved.
The Church has faith in a God of peace
Consistent with its information mission, La Croix has decided to raise awareness among its readers on this subject. It thus participates in the debate on the necessary efforts, on a national and European scale, to dissuade Moscow from attempting the adventure. Under the theme “Confronting war, conquering peace”, our newspaper is committed to the Christian vision of peace. For the Catholic Church, war is never inevitable. Pope Leo The Church has faith in a God of peace. She has confidence in the capacity of human beings to be peacemakers.
While war rumbles not far from us, we are invited to weave the threads of realism and deep spiritual thought. Many soldiers live with this dialectic. These questions arise today for each and every one of us.
