The Canal+ group will invest nearly a billion euros between 2028 and 2032 in French and European cinema, its boss Maxime Saada announced on Monday July 27 on the social network X, after an agreement with sector organizations.

It is “a new historic agreement between Canal+ and French cinema organizations”, welcomed the manager, while the subject had provoked heated controversy at the Cannes Film Festival in May. He assured that his group was the “first partner of French and European cinema for a long time”.

Maxime Saada then affirmed that his group no longer wished to finance the films of the signatories of a forum which denounced “the growing influence of the extreme right” in cinema, targeting the conservative billionaire Vincent Bolloré, the reference shareholder of his group. He then denied wanting to draw up a “black list”.

980 million euros of investment

Worth 980 million euros, the agreement announced Monday “will allow Canal+ to continue to offer its subscribers the biggest French, European and international films six months after their theatrical release,” the company said in a press release.

Maxime Saada assured that Canal+ was the “first partner of French and European cinema for a long time”. French cinema “deserves to be supported, financed and accompanied” and “this is what we have been doing for more than 40 years,” he stressed.
