Summer series: 100 years ago, Pius XI condemned Action Française

What is the position of La Croix in the serious crisis of Action Française? In the editorial office located on Rue Bayard, in the heart of Paris, Father François d’Assise Bertoye, religious editor-in-chief – who signs under the name “Franc” – and Jean Guiraud, the political editor-in-chief, certainly have sympathies for Action Française. “Affinities between the Catholic daily newspaper and the royalist newspaper in two areas: that of international politics and that of religious politics, that is to say the fight against secularism” (1), wrote the historian Jacques Prévotat in 1983, on the occasion of the centenary of the newspaper. While emphasizing that this does not mean that La Croix as a whole is accepted.
