A family in Australia welcomed identical quadruplets born from one and the same placenta: a birth whose chances are estimated at one in 15 million according to their doctor, who rejoiced at the four little miracles.
«[La maman] Jenitar overcame everything with remarkable ease from day one. She managed to avoid all the complications and all the risks, both for herself and for her babies,” emphasized Dr. Alexa Bendall, specialist in fetal medicine and obstetrician, to BBC on Monday.
Little Emily, Harriet, Catherine and Alexa, the latter named in honor of their obstetrician, are the very first case of monozygotic pregnancy – that is to say from a single fertilized egg which separates, creating beings with identical genetic information – involving quadruplets in Australia.

Monozygotic pregnancies of this magnitude are extremely rare and only a handful of similar cases have been recorded worldwide, according to their doctor.
“It is estimated that monozygotic quadruplets [ou quadruplés identiques] occur in one in 15 million pregnancies, but the fact that they share the same placenta is unheard of,” Dr. Bendall told ABC News.
To ensure that the pregnancy continued without a hitch, the mother, Jenitar Sau Na’amoana, 34, was hospitalized at 25 weeks pregnant, before giving birth just over three weeks later, on July 14, by cesarean section at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland.
“We have always said that if we managed to reach the 28-week mark, that would already be a great success. So having a mom and four beautiful, healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible, and we’re so happy to have been a part of it,” she added.

The parents of these “precious little miracles” indicated that their hearts “are overflowing with gratitude”, even if their arrival is accompanied by a panoply of logistical challenges “that we could never have imagined”. Especially since the family already had four children aged 1, 3, 8 and 10 years old.
“We urgently need a larger vehicle – one that seats at least 10 or 12 –, essential equipment for babies, as well as help with medical costs, travel and daily expenses,” the parents wrote in a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign.
In almost a month, the campaign had reached 83,460 Australian dollars, the equivalent of approximately $82,325.
