An explosion shook Damascus on Tuesday July 7 in the morning, in an area close to the hotel in the center of the Syrian capital where the French president spent the night. Emmanuel Macron safe and sound, his visit continues, assured the Élysée.

Witnesses saw smoke rising from the neighborhood as the French president left the Four Seasons hotel and arrived at the presidential palace for a meeting with his counterpart Ahmed al-Chareh. Ambulances, sirens blaring, headed towards the scene while security forces blocked several exits leading to the area.

Emmanuel Macron arrived in Syria on Monday evening, the first visit by a leader of a Western power to the country since an Islamist coalition came to power.

His visit comes in a tense security context, as ten people were killed Thursday in a bomb attack on a cafe in central Damascus. Monday evening, Emmanuel Macron had dinner with the Syrian president in a restaurant in the center of Damascus before going with him to the famous Umayyad mosque in the heart of the city.
