This weekend, the skies over Washington will light up like never before. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, the American capital is hosting a fireworks display of unprecedented scale. According to an analysis of Washington Postbased on planning documents and data provided by the organizers, more than 1,900 kilos of fireworks will be launched every minute, or 354 pyrotechnic projectiles per second.
Behind this titanic spectacle is Pyrotecnico, a specialized Pennsylvanian manufacturer, which is orchestrating a major logistical operation. More than 50 trucks and a team of at least 75 people will be mobilized in three launch zones: the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, West Potomac Park and the Potomac River.
To understand the extent of the difference with an ordinary fireworks display: a classic show lasts between 10 and 20 minutes and uses 1000 to 3000 pyrotechnic effects. Saturday’s will last 40 minutes and feature more than 850,000 effects. For comparison, the last Super Bowl halftime show had just 9,900, brought in with two tractor-trailers and a truck.
If all goes as planned, this spectacle will shatter the current world record for the largest fireworks display, held since 2016 by theChurch Of Christ in the Philippines.
A national anniversary which promises to be, literally, explosive.
