In the twenty year old comedy Aquamarine (2006), two best friends see their greatest wish come true when a mermaid suddenly washes ashore. It’s the kind of film that would have easily been forgotten without a cult following, but thanks to Disney, that will no longer be the case in a while. The fairy tale studio has decided to make a series adaptation of Aquamarine to grant a pilot.
Breakthrough
Emma Roberts, ‘JoJo’ and Sara Paxton starred together in this light-hearted film about a mermaid who has to learn to live among people. For Roberts, it was just after her breakout role on the Nickelodeon sitcom Unfabulous. She later starred in American Horror Story and Scream Queens, among others.

Thin line
The line between the original film and the new series for Disney+ (and Disney Channel) is thin. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum will also direct and produce the series, with Roberts also co-producing and a guest role as her character Claire Brown. The screenwriters who worked on the film in the zeroes are not involved. Their replacement, Sarah Watson, wrote several episodes of the popular fantasy series Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023– ).

5.5 Watch on Disney+ • When the beautiful mermaid Aquamarine washes ashore during a late summer storm, two best friends see their heart’s desire come true.
From the Aquamarineseries, a pilot is now first being prepared to see whether there is enough potential in a full season.
