What is the xenophobic violence in South Africa?
After starting in the coastal city of Durban in eastern South Africa in April, violence against immigrants, fueled by a torrent of online hatred, has taken on a national scale. In recent weeks, xenophobic demonstrations, which target black nationals from other countries on the continent, have multiplied across the four corners of the country, while anti-migrant groups have set an ultimatum for June 30 for undocumented foreigners, ordering them to leave the country before this date. At the end of May, two Mozambicans (five according to Maputo authorities) were killed during violence in the port city of Mossel Bay, in the South.
