The United States has designated two Mexican drug cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday.

These are the Juárez and Los Viagras cartels, “violent narcoterrorists who have committed numerous attacks against Americans, Mexican security forces and civilians, including the massacre of nine American citizens perpetrated in 2019 in the state of Sonora,” Mr. Rubio said in a statement.
Washington has classified several Latin American gangs and cartels as terrorist organizations, including Venezuela’s “Tren de Aragua” and Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, as part of President Donald Trump’s fight to eradicate the groups.
Such a designation prohibits them from any access to the American financial system and any transaction or support in their favor.
