
For their leader, Sonia Backès, it is an “unambiguous message”. The union of the two main movements opposed to the independence of New Caledonia, the Loyalists and the Rally, largely dominated the provincial elections on Sunday June 28 in the southern province of the archipelago, the one which brings together 75% of the territory’s 264,000 inhabitants. This electoral coalition collected more than 50% of the votes there, and even 60% in the capital Nouméa, according to the provisional results which should be made official on Monday June 29 in the morning.
