What do small, crumpled portraits, worn from having spent years in a wallet, young people smiling brightly in the company of a polar bear, beautiful creatures languid on the hood of a car or crying toddlers on Santa’s lap have in common? Nothing, a priori, except to be a few snapshots of the 20th century escaped from the collection of Jean-Marie Donat: more than 40,000 photographs patiently collected over forty years by an image madman.
