“Look, we see Vimy and Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, and, on the other side, we see Lille and even the mountains of Flanders…” Franck Thilliez admires for the umpteenth time this breathtaking 360° panorama, “all at the top of the ch’terril”, as they say here. Under a bright sun, the sports writer had no trouble reaching the summit of one of the two black mountains of Loos-en-Gohelle (Pas-de-Calais). Located on the site of the former mining pit 11/19, these two twin slag heaps, the highest in Europe, peak at an altitude of 186 meters, and are visible from more than 40 km away: “I come there at least once a week to run and tread on these masses of unusable waste on which an entire ecosystem has been rebuilt…”, says the famous author of noir thrillers.
