The announcement immediately sparked controversy in Israel. On July 9, three chief rabbis of Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox town on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, announced the creation of an organization responsible for ensuring “modesty” in public spaces. His first initiative planned to distribute men and women on separate sidewalks in two streets lined with reception rooms.
