
Is the process of relegation of the French language in Algeria irreversible? Saturday July 25, in an unexpected outing, the Algerian Minister of National Education, Mohamed-Seghir Saadaoui, announced that the language of Molière will henceforth cease to be the first foreign language in Algerian schools. From the start of the school year next September, it will be supplanted by English taught from the third year of schooling for schoolchildren in the country. The latter will return to French the following year.
