The terrorist attack which cost the life of Father Jacques Hamel, an 85-year-old priest, in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, in the suburbs of Rouen, on July 26, 2016, caused shock waves in France and well beyond. The particular circumstances of this tragedy contributed to the repercussions of the event: the murder of a priest while he was celebrating the Eucharist in a church had not taken place in France since the Revolution. With his last words (“Go away, Satan”), Jacques Hamel also left a testimony of faith which left an impression, and not only among Catholics.
