In the Landes, the fire “better contained”
The fire which occurred on Thursday July 23 near Biscarrosse continued to spread this Sunday July 26 over 3,600 hectares compared to around 3,500 the day before, but the situation has improved slightly. The fire is “better contained but not fixed”, with “slightly less unfavorable” conditions, announced the prefecture, which anticipates a “strategic day” to try to control it. This fire led to the evacuation of more than 30,000 people, residents of the town and those neighboring Parentis-en-Born and Sanguinet, as well as the occupants of two campsites in the very touristy area. 3,000 evacuees were able to return to their homes in “stabilized” areas from Saturday.
In Gironde, the fire threatens the outskirts of the metropolis
The estimated burned area is 42,000 hectares according to a report from the Gironde prefecture at the end of the night. The fire still threatens the outskirts of Bordeaux and the A63 motorway between Bordeaux and Spain is closed for 60 km.
SNCF traffic is also interrupted south of Bordeaux until further notice. With the evacuation during the night of new municipalities located in the south-east of the Basin or close to the metropolis (Marcheprime, Le Barp, Biganos, Mios, Cestas), a total of 220,000 people have now been evacuated in Gironde.
In the Var, the fire is still very active
Saturday July 25 in the evening, the fire in Pontevès, in the Var, was still very active after having covered 4,000 hectares in five days. Some 2,000 people were evacuated. Starting on Tuesday at midday from a field in Pontevès, the fire burned parts of Gros Bessillon, a wooded mountain in the Var hinterland, threatening several surrounding towns and requiring occasional evacuations each time the fire broke out.
In Spain, situation out of control in Valencia
The fire near Valencia is out of control, according to authorities. One person died in a fire and 15,000 people were evacuated. “The fire exceeds our extinguishing capabilities, its perimeter is approximately 21 kilometers. It is still difficult to determine the number of hectares burned,” Juanfran Perez Llorca, president of the Valencia region, told journalists on Saturday evening.
Madrid is facing the “worst” fire in its history. Some 60,000 people were also evacuated there. Two separate wildfires joined together on Friday to form one huge blaze, which was about to merge with a third in the neighboring region of Castile and León. The flames ravaged up to 25,000 hectares west of the Spanish capital.
