“Gardarem los castels catars” (“We will keep our Cathar castles”). It was on this slogan that a few dozen demonstrators gathered on July 18, 2026 on the rocky spur of the Quéribus castle, in Aude, for a last stand of honor, a few days before its possible inscription as a UNESCO world heritage site. Prepared since 2013 by the department of Aude associated with that of Ariège, the file which brings together eight “royal fortresses” – Carcassonne, Quéribus, Puilaurens, Termes, Peyrepertuse, Lastours, Aguilar and Montségur – has a serious chance of receiving the precious label by July 27, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee.
