
John Healey, former Minister of Defense in Keir Starmer’s government, was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer on Monday July 20, 2026 by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. This choice came as a surprise as well as an obvious one. At 66, he is one of Labour’s historic figures and one of its most loyal members. Originally from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, this northerner, like Andy Burnham, studied political science at Cambridge.
