The two firefighters who died while fighting a fire on Tuesday near Bordeaux airport were on board an intervention truck which found itself “trapped” by the flames, Marc Vermeulen, director of Sdis de Gironde, told the press.
Their death occurred “in the first minutes of the attack phase” of the fire, declared in the middle of the afternoon, while they were “faced with very violent dynamics” in a “very dense” pine forest, added the official, specifying that the fire was now “fixed”.

An investigation was opened by the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy and the origin of the fire. The death of the two firefighters was announced by the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, to the National Assembly.
