“Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, my sister, my mother. »
With these words, Jesus gives a definition of family that goes beyond the spectrum of the biological bond. Without saying it explicitly, he points to his disciples as if to signify that they constitute his family. Does he therefore deny his biological family? Let’s examine this point.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was the first to abandon herself to the will of God. Without necessarily understanding, she welcomed God’s plan for humanity. From the manger to the cross, she followed her son throughout his life with total fidelity. Today, his initial yes continues to resonate as the perfect response to give to demonstrate our adhesion to Christ. She is the perfect model of commitment to put herself to the school of Christ.
In the conclusion of his first encyclical, Pope Leo XIV invites us to contemplate the faith of the Virgin Mary as a model of hope. “With the same faith as Mary, let us become weavers of hope in our world, by sharing what we are and what we have, so that the presence of Jesus grows among us and his Kingdom takes shape. » (Magnificat Humanitas, n.245).
