The death toll from the double earthquake of June 24 in Venezuela exceeds 5,000 deaths, according to a new assessment, still provisional, published Friday by the President of Parliament Jorge Rodriguez.
At least 5,069 people lost their lives during the deadly earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 which struck 39 seconds apart in the north of the country, particularly the state of La Guaira, neighboring the capital Caracas.
The latest death toll was 4,930 on Thursday, the number of injured remains stable at 16,740.
The authorities do not mention the number of the missing. The UN estimated that it could reach up to 50,000 two days after the tragedy. Some projections put the figure closer to 10,000.
In Guiara, nearly 20,000 homeless people are crowded into makeshift camps set up in stadiums, in public squares and on sidewalks, while the search for bodies continues in the rubble of buildings.
According to official figures, more than 850 buildings were damaged and 190 completely collapsed.
