“We recorded 14 deaths and five injuries due to the fall of a van into a precipice,” Ricardo Chilón, an official in the municipality of San Juan, 800 kilometers north of Lima, told AFP.
The driver and a child were among the victims, Mr. Chilón said.
The vehicle was carrying 19 passengers to Ciudad de Dios, near the San Juan district. An investigation is underway to determine the causes of the accident.
Road accidents are common in Peru, due to poor road conditions, lack of controls and excessive speed.
Last year, more than 3,000 deaths were recorded on the country’s roads, according to official figures.
