Biblical commentaries
“Come to me, all you who labor under the weight of burden, and I will give you rest. » By saying this, Jesus evokes a very particular fatigue. To the disciples tired by the mission, Jesus recommended that they go ahead of him, while he himself took care of the crowd.
Jesus addresses this call to join him to the crowd, not physically tired, but defeated, disoriented, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus discerns in us another fatigue, that of existence, that of meaning, that of our wanderings.
This inner weariness can affect us personally at certain times in our lives. But it can also affect certain eras, marked by disenchantment, disappointment or profound disorientation. Humanity is often prey to this basic fatigue. And this is not resolved first by a legitimate physical rest, by a necessary slowing down, but by this encounter with Christ: “Come to me! »
Christ does not propose a crisis exit strategy, he does not propose a set of techniques. His rest, the deep peace he gives us, does not come from the absence of burden, but from his presence at our side, from his gentle and humble heart which beats in ours.
