“Yes Father! You wanted it this way in your kindness. » This is the only occurrence of the word yes in the mouth of Jesus. The epistle to the Hebrews has him say twice: “Here I am”. A first time before the incarnation: “You formed a body for me […] then I said: Here I am, I have come, my God, to do your will. » (Heb 10, 5-7) And another time after the Ascension: “Here I am, me and the children whom God has given me. » (He 2, 13) From its origin to its end, the whole life of Christ is a yes given to the Father.
The works – including the most beautiful – of the Christian faith are always in the nature of a flowering. At the heart of faith is this inner yes. Christ gave it at every moment of his life, Mary gave it in the secret of Nazareth, others on the shores of Lake Galilee. Today, some give it in the meditation of a church during the day, others through a trial or a stage of life. Very often, this yes is given in words, sometimes only in actions and in truth.
For everyone, this yes is always a response to a call that precedes us. Faith is not a mental escape. Nor is it a system of values. It is an encounter, an initiative of God who calls us: “The master is there, he is calling you” (Jn 11:28).
