The Symon Petlioura affair, 100 years later
On October 18, 1927, the trial of Samuel Schwartzbard opened in Paris. It takes place over eight days. We are barely seventeen months after the assassination in Paris of Ukrainian leader Symon Petliura. At the time, the affair excited public opinion which was divided on the fate to be reserved for the assassin. Is he this “vigilante of the Jewish people” that he claims to be? Or was he manipulated into committing this murder? Or would he himself be a Soviet agent having acted on behalf of Moscow?
