The Symon Petlioura affair, 100 years later
On May 25, 2026, around a hundred people crowded into a narrow alley in the Montparnasse cemetery, in Paris, around a black marble tomb. The small crowd is sweating in their ceremonial clothes, in this scorching spring. In the assembly, men in military uniforms, women in vychyvanka, the embroidered shirt of the Ukrainians. We recognize the Ukrainian ambassador to France and two bishops, one Greek-Catholic, the other Orthodox. There are flags and flower crowns. This gathering honors Symon Petliura, leader of the first Ukrainian independence, assassinated exactly one hundred years ago in Paris.
