Before hitting Chinese lands around midnight on Sunday July 12, the diameter of Typhoon Bavi was close to the width of mainland France. This super typhoon, classified as category 5 at the height of its activity, made Beijing fear the worst. It first hit Guam and the Northern Marianas in the Pacific, then brought violent rainfall to Taiwan. Its effects were felt as far as the Philippines, where landslides killed 18 people.
