According to initial investigations, at the end of a “private evening”, the driver of the truck and some of his guests “wanted to celebrate the victory of the French football team”, explained Laurent Dumaine, public prosecutor of Avesnes-sur-Helpe, in a press release.
“They got into the cabin of the vehicle” and headed towards the town center of Aulnoye-Aymeries “where the density of the population limited their progress”, he added.
Several dozen vehicles gathered in the city center, honking their horns in the wake of France’s victory (2-0), in a “good-natured” atmosphere, the deputy mayor in charge of culture, Jean Durieux, reported to AFP.
The young girl, from Jeumont, a nearby town, allegedly got on the stationary truck and fell off when it started, slowly according to witnesses, he reported.
Several people “climbed onto the rear platform of the truck from where the victim fell before being crushed by the road complex,” the prosecutor also detailed.
The driver of the vehicle, aged 45, “was immediately stopped and arrested” for the offense of road homicide.
“The findings on the scene of the events as well as on the vehicle in question were carried out,” said the magistrate.
The teenager died on the spot, according to firefighters, and six minors were near the accident. One of them, in a state of shock, was hospitalized at the Maubeuge hospital center.
“This plunges the city into consternation,” underlined Mr. Durieux, calling for “responsibility” during the festivities.
In Paris, the police headquarters recorded ten people arrested after this France-Morocco match.
