He was one of the cardinals whose name often came up before the last conclave. Cardinal Cristóbal López Romero, archbishop of Rabat (Morocco) since 2017, announced on July 7, in a press release addressed to the faithful of his diocese which La Croix has seen, to withdraw from his diocese. The 74-year-old Spanish cardinal is accused by several women of sexual violence, and is the subject of an investigation at the Vatican.
