The man was seen around 3:45 p.m. trying to climb the Eiffel Tower between the second and third floors and hanging an American flag there, said the same source. The individual was arrested as he arrived on the third floor.
The climber gave no explanation as to the motivations for his action, she reported.
He was taken into custody for “endangering the lives of others” at the police station in the 7th district of the capital, she added.
The star-spangled banner was taken down by the intervention and protection group (GIP) of the Directorate of Public Order and Traffic (DOPC) of the Paris police headquarters.
The United States celebrated Saturday the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia (east), marking the break of thirteen colonies with the British Crown. And the day before, Friday evening, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colors of this 250th anniversary, the letters USA and the numbers 250, in blue, white and red appearing on the 1st floor.
