“We may be the oldest constitutional republic in the world, but our country is only just beginning, because the best is yet to come,” the businessman said on Saturday.
Trying to make this holiday his own, Donald Trump attacked his opponents whom he describes as “communists”, declaring “we don’t want communists in this country”.
For political scientist Luc Laliberté, “there is no communism in the United States, but the label is strong and it is the more progressive elected officials, even socialist therefore, that they qualify as communists”.
Compared to his last four predecessors, Donald Trump has barely mentioned freedom of expression, religion and equal justice for all present in the American Constitution, which normally have a unifying effect among our southern neighbors.
“The declaration of independence, the constitution, the separation of powers, all of that still stands 250 years later. And he mentioned these things very little, he emphasized them very little,” underlines the specialist in American politics in Quebec morning.
In his pre-election speech, the American president, however, focused on the second amendment of the Constitution which allows the possession and carrying of firearms.
“And during the nearly six years that I was president, I defended your Second Amendment very, very firmly,” Donald Trump said. And they didn’t change anything. And it wasn’t easy. But we defend your second amendment. We have defended it very, very firmly and cautiously over the generations. »
Trump also welcomed the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela as well as the joint military attack with Israel launched against Iran, two events which he described as a “great success”.
The speech ended with 850,000 fireworks in 40 minutes, the largest fireworks display on record.
