Both during his speech at Mount Rushmore on Friday and that of Saturday evening in Washington, the American president attacked the “communists”, affirming that the Americans did not want them in their country.
“It’s very surprising because we can still see that Donald Trump has hardly changed much in 24 hours,” said independent journalist in Washington Axel Monnier, in an interview with LCN.
With two similar speeches on communism in two days, Donald Trump seems to have decided to bank on this “enemy” to reverse the trend in voting intentions.
“The idea that communism is a real threat to the United States is as present as the idea that Martians might land and invade Texas. So here we have Trump trying to find a new way to mobilize his base,” declared Guillaume Lavoie, associate member of the Raoul-Dandurand Chair, in an interview with LCN.
In an unfortunate position in the polls, Donald Trump is trying by all means to restore vigor to the Republican forces.
“In the American collective consciousness, communism is a danger that we have triumphed over. So if we manage to portray certain political opponents as communists, that can certainly help the Republicans,” says doctoral student in political science at Sciences Po Paris, Georges Mercier.
“That does not mean that the supporters of Zohran Mamdani, although they have much more left-wing, more radical public policies, are nevertheless communists and wish to nationalize the means of production. That’s not necessarily the question. But for Donald Trump, it is a great opportunity to present himself as a defender in the face of a danger that would return,” he adds.
