Ridley Scott is far from done making films. The 88-year-old director has revealed in a new interview which projects are at the top of his wish list. Remarkably, the maker of classics like Gladiator (2000) in The Martian (2015) once again making a large-scale war drama about the First World War.
Battle of the Somme
Although Scott’s officially announced adventure filmTreasure Islandstarring Hugh Jackman, is currently his top priority, the director is already making plans for far beyond. Scott has not yet found a studio that will produce Treasure Island wants to finance. If plans for that film fall through, the director wants to get started immediately Covenant With Death. This film is based on the novel of the same name by John Harris and is set during the bloody Battle of the Somme, one of the most devastating battles of the First World War.
Hundreds of millions
Despite the fact that Scott will turn 89 in November, he doesn’t seem to be thinking about quitting anytime soon. The director does acknowledge that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find studios that are willing to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in large-scale productions. Scott is known for his preference for large-scale, practical film sets over fully digital sets. He prefers to film on location and build complete environments that are then expanded with CGI. This ambitious approach produces spectacular images, but at the same time also significantly increases production costs.
