According to statistics from the National Book Center, the French read less and less. In 2025, only 45% of them say they read every day or almost every day. How to promote reading?
Many things are possible! I’ll take a very simple example: organize free public readings of texts, aloud, by two quality actors. It’s simple to set up. But for that, we need public policy. And an educational policy, because it is in schools that we learn to read. I think that we can read a text by Flaubert, Sartre, any author in front of an audience that is not informed, and that audience suddenly be fascinated by what they hear.
