La Croix: At least 2,180 executions have been documented this year, not counting the thousands estimated in China, by the ECPM. How do you explain the increase in executions this year?
Raphaël Chenuil-Hazan: The primary cause of this increase is a country, Iran, which is causing death penalty figures to explode around the world. This is linked to the repression of democratic movements, against a backdrop of war and the hardening of the regime. At least 1,639 executions took place there in 2025. Iran holds the country’s sad record for the highest execution rate per capita.
