As the search for the next James Bond has officially begun, former casting director Debbie McWilliams has spoken out about the future of the iconic secret agent. According to the woman who was responsible for the casting of the Bond films for forty years, some frequently mentioned names are not suitable for the role.
“Bond must remain a mystery”
The former casting director sees no future for much-discussed candidates such as Jacob Elordi (Wuthering Heights (2026)), Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)) of Harris Dickinson (Babygirl (2024)). According to her, it is important that James Bond remains an elusive and mysterious figure. “It’s absolutely essential that Bond remains a complete mystery. I don’t want to see any of them as Bond because we know so much about them now. We want to know as little about their private lives as possible. That’s just how spies are.” She added that the audience should never feel like they really know Bond. “We don’t need to know where he shops, who his parents are or where he lives. We never want to see him at home. And we have to believe he has a license to kill. If you don’t, you lose the public.”
McWilliams, who was involved in the Bond franchise of For Your Eyes Only (1981)to No Time to Die (2021), was responsible for the casting of Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as 007.

New Bond film is taking shape
After McWilliams’ retirement, the casting of the new 007 is in the hands of Nina Gold. She previously worked on major productions such as Game of Thrones (2011–2019) in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), for which she cast Daisy Ridley as Rey. In May, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that the search for a new James Bond has officially begun.
Denis Villeneuve at the helm
The 26th Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Dune (2021), Blade Runner 2049 (2017)), while Steven Knight, known as the creator of Peaky Blinders (2013–2022), writing the screenplay.
Although the rumors about the new James Bond continue for the time being, one thing is clear: the search for Daniel Craig’s successor is a difficult task.
