British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday June 22 during a speech in front of Downing Street in London, specifying that he would remain in office until the appointment of his successor at the head of Labor.
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first. “That’s why I’m going to resign as leader of the Labor Party,” he said, his voice choked with tears. Starmer, under increasing pressure to leave power since his rival Andy Burnham’s victory in a parliamentary by-election last week, had come to power in July 2024.
