Pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as several media outlets have reported that he could resign as early as Monday. Donald Trump added his two cents to the situation, saying on Sunday that Starmer had failed on certain issues, a gesture which would amount to “low-grade” personal revenge, according to a political analyst.

According to several international media, Keir Starmer’s resignation could be imminent following the victory of candidate Andy Burnham in a by-election. The latter could take the head of the Labor Party and thus dislodge Starmer. Several influential ministers have also reportedly asked the Prime Minister to initiate an orderly transition.
On Sunday, Donald Trump fueled speculation by saying on his network Truth Social that Keir Starmer “will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom”, although no official announcement has been made by the latter.

“He has failed miserably on two very important issues: IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN THE NORTH SEA OIL FIELDS!). I wish him good luck! “, he added in his publication.
According to the associated member of the Raoul-Dandurand Chair, Guillaume Lavoie, the possible departure of Keir Starmer would not be surprising, contrary to Donald Trump’s declaration.

“Someone who follows British politics is not particularly surprised by the possible short-term departure of the British Prime Minister whose foundations in his party are wavering everywhere. Now that a foreign leader has decided to make this kind of thunderous declaration, the Latin word for that is “cheap,” he declared on LCN on Sunday.
A bad image of the United States
The American president’s message would say more about himself than about the British political situation, the analyst believes.
“Clearly this is low-level personal revenge because Mr. Starmer, like Ms. Meloni, the Italian Prime Minister, did not follow Donald Trump with his eyes closed in the Iranian conflict and in other things,” he stressed.

Donald Trump also rekindled the diplomatic dispute with Italy on Saturday, claiming that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had asked him “again and again” to take a photo with him during the G7 summit a few days earlier.
Guillaume Lavoie believes that this type of attacks against heads of state sends a negative signal internationally and ends up tarnishing relations.
“There is no [Trump] no loyalty, no sense of state and more and more in chancelleries around the world, we understand that he is neither a reliable nor honorable partner. And that reflects negatively on the posture of the United States,” he added.
