On June 16, 1944 around 8 p.m., thirty resistance fighters, including Marc Bloch, were taken from their cells in Montluc prison, in Lyon, by German soldiers, handcuffed in pairs and taken in a covered truck to Saint-Didier-de-Formans (Ain). The soldiers forced them into a meadow where four shooters machine-gunned them, then finished them off with bullets to the head. After the massacre in which two men survived, villagers buried these anonymous people, including “victim No. 14”, who was identified as Marc Bloch, in November 1944, by his daughter Alice and his historian friend Lucien Febvre.
