France will invest an additional 655 million euros in the development of artificial intelligence so that “this revolution benefits the French”, announced Sébastien Lecornu on Tuesday June 16, on the eve of the opening in Paris of the VivaTech exhibition dedicated to new technologies.

The France 2030 public investment program in innovation will devote “an additional 655 million euros to the development of artificial intelligence”, declared the Prime Minister in a video broadcast on his social networks. These investments will “support infrastructure, computing capacities, research, businesses and industrial sectors”, he explains, hoping “that this revolution benefits the French”, “protects our sovereignty” and “strengthens our public services”.

Like electricity yesterday, like the Internet thirty years ago, artificial intelligence is already changing our lives.

The time for experimentation is over. I have decided to accelerate the transformation of the State:

AI, robots and digital sovereignty in the face of American and Chinese technology giants will be at the center of the 10th edition of the VivaTech show, the largest European event in the sector, which opens in Paris from Wednesday to Saturday.

Furthermore, Sébastien Lecornu announced that French domestic intelligence (DGSI) had decided to terminate its contract with the American data analysis giant Palantir, whose co-founder Peter Thiel is close to Donald Trump. The DGSI finally “retained” the French company ChapsVision. “We cannot accept new strategic dependencies in digital technology,” he justified, wanting to “build real autonomy” so as not to “depend on the goodwill of certain partners, capable (…) of turning off the access tap” to AI.

AI to save money in ministries

To encourage the French state to use artificial intelligence, while hoping to make savings at the same time, Sébastien Lecornu warns that the “capacity” of ministries to use AI “will now be taken into account in budgetary decisions”. “Each ministry will have to demonstrate how it uses artificial intelligence to simplify procedures, improve the service provided to the French and reduce unnecessary tasks,” he explains. “And therefore, save money without reducing the quality of public service.”

The government also intends to generalize a conversational digital tool using artificial intelligence for around one million state civil service agents, said the Ministry of Action and Public Accounts. The testing phase with 10,000 agents of this conversational tool, called the Assistant and powered by models from the artificial intelligence start-up Mistral, was launched in October.

The Ministries of Justice and the Interior will have “from this year” the “most advanced” technologies in AI, assured the Prime Minister, with the GenIAl portal, already used by that of the armed forces, in order to “process sensitive data” or for example “accelerate the processing of visas”.

In terms of health, the Ameli Health Insurance site will have a “public health assistant” based on artificial intelligence to better guide patients who will thus be able to “entrust their health data to an AI managed by Health Insurance and not to a foreign company”. Sébastien Lecornu also promises better access to public data, for example demographic data.
