
Last Thursday, June 11, Niger adopted, in turn, a new repressive law against LGBT+ people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, queers, intersex, asexuals, etc.). Homosexuality was until then a social taboo, but not punishable by law. It becomes an offense punishable by five to ten years in prison and a fine of up to €150,000. This is specified in the text of the country’s penal code, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, who came to power in July 2023 through a coup d’état.
