Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen after signing a peace deal with Iran on Friday, appearing to contradict one of his previous messages which suggested the immediate reopening of this strategic sea lane.
“With the opening of the strait as soon as the agreement is signed on Friday, to allow mine clearance, oil will flow again on both sides for the region and the whole world,” wrote on his Truth Social platform the American president, who had previously announced the reopening of the strait as well as the “immediate” lifting of the American naval blockade. “This great agreement will bring peace and security to the entire region,” he also said.
6:30 a.m. – UK, France, Germany and Italy ready to lift some sanctions on Iran
The E4 countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy, on Sunday welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, which provides for an end to hostilities, saying they were ready to lift certain sanctions weighing on Iran, in a joint statement.
“Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. We are ready to work with States? United, Iran and the IAEA to this end,” declared the leaders of these European countries, quoted in the press release. They add that they are “willing to lift relevant sanctions in response to clear and verifiable steps by Iran regarding its nuclear program.”
